Attica’s emerald shores
Over the centuries the sea has shaped the land of Attica, with a beautiful shoreline. Its name derives from the ancient “Aktiki”, meaning a land with many “aktes”(i.e. shores). You will adore the beaches of Attica. Whether you simply want to enjoy the sea, or whether you want to try out sea sports – diving, water-skiing, fishing – you will find all you need and much more on the beaches of Attica.
Experience life on Attica’s shoreline, enjoy its amenities, swim in the crystal-clear waters, play on the sandy beaches and enjoy the services offered in most of them. Spas, beach bars, restaurants, water sports and various other amenities create an attractive combination. Voula, Vouliagmeni, Kavouri, Lagonisi are the best known Attican beaches, among many others.
Attica’s coastline consists of coves, turns and bays that are definitely worth a visit. Small or far stretching, pebbly or sandy, quiet or busy ones can guarantee you enjoyable moments. If you wish to take your family or friends for a day by the beach choose among Limanakia in Vouliagmeni, Thymari in Palaia Fokaia, Charakas, Legraina, which are some of the best known and at the same time quiet beaches.
Cape Sounio is the place to go to capture one of the most exquisite sunsets in Attica. The majestic temple of Poseidon and the ruins of the temple of Athena are significant archaeological sites. Make a point in swimming at Kavokolones as you will enjoy the view of the Temple of Poseidon.
At a short distance from Cape Sounio you can visit the port town of Lavrio. You can swim nearby in Pasalimani, Pounta Zeza and other small rocky coves. Follow the coastline from Voula to Lavrio and continue further north towards Evoikos Gulf; within a short walking distance from the road you will find small secluded beaches and bays. Rocky inlets, caves washed by the waves and tiny stretches of sand are all there to charm you!
Head south-west of Athens, by the Saronic Gulf, where you’ll enjoy exquisite beaches; Loutropyrgos, Neraki, Kinetta, and other less known beaches, such as Kalogerolimano, are located near Athens.
The western shores of Attica – Corinthian Gulf
Attica is washed by the Evoikos Gulf to the east and the Corinthian Gulf to the west. The narrow Corinthian Gulf has great beaches; Psatha, Porto Germeno and other beaches lie beneath Mount Pateras. Hotels, restaurants, seaside bars, caffes and picturesque villages await you. Lush trails lead down to wonderful, usually pebbled, beaches.
Not only in summer
Attica’s beaches can be enjoyed year round; eat seafood in wonderful restaurants or drink your coffee in a cafe. Athens Riviera is perfect for romantic autumn walks, winter getaways – even bike rides – overlooking the sunset mirrored in the sea, spring excursions under the sun, and unforgettable picnics by the sea.
